Activities: How to say “to start” and “to finish” in Japanese?

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Choose the appropriate option.

  1. お鍋に肉を入れて、色が変わり      、醤油を入れてください。
    Onabe ni niku o irete, iro ga kawari ... , shōyu o irete kudasai.
    Put the meat in the pot, and when the color starts changing, add the soy sauce.

Exercise 2: Fill in the blank

Fill in the blank using 〜始める, 〜出す, 〜終わる, 〜終える or 〜やむ. Note that you can use each expression only once!
  1. Situation

    You want to ask your friend to return your computer to where it was, when done using it.

    Vocabulary

    使う transcribed tsukaumeaning to use

    コンピュータを、元の場所に戻しておいてね。
    Konpyūtā o ...ra, moto no basho ni modoshite oite ne.
    When you are done using the computer, please return it to the original spot.

  2. Situation

    You started living in Japan a month ago and you were asked how you are doing.

    日本にばかりなので、わからないことがたくさんあります。
    Nihon ni ... bakari na node, wakaranai koto ga takusan arimasu.
    I’ve just started living in Japan so there are many things that I don’t understand.

  3. Situation

    It's been raining since yesterday morning and you want to comment on how it doesn’t stop raining.

    Vocabulary

    降る transcribed furumeaning to rain

    なかなか雨がね。
    Nakanaka ame ga ... ne.
    It doesn’t stop raining easily.

  4. Situation

    You met with your brother at the entrance door. He asks whether you’ve bought a new video game which just came out today. You were just heading out to get it. You reply.

  5. Situation

    Your friend has been very supportive of you writing a thesis. You want to say that you finally were able to finish writing it.

    ようやく論文を ことができたから、お祝いしよう。
    Yōyaku ronbun o ... koto ga dekita kara, oiwai shiyō.
    Let’s celebrate because (I) was finally able to finish writing (my) thesis.

  6. Situation

    You have been searching for your favorite towel for a while. You finally found the culprit so you want to report to your friend.

    Vocabulary

    見つける transcribed mitsukerumeaning to find / find out

    やっと探していたタオルをよ。犬のあずきが犬小屋の中に持って行ってたんだよ!
    Yatto sagashite ita taoru o ... yo. Inu no Azuki ga inugoya no naka ni motte itteta n da yo!
    I finally found the towel that I have been looking for. It was Azuki, the dog, who took it to her kennel!
