Activity 2: Reflexive pronouns for emphasis

Fill in the gaps with reflexive pronouns to add an emphasis.

  • Did you really make all this furniture ?

  • Neil Armstrong told me this story.

  • Oil doesn’t burn easily, but most of its products do.

  • Nancy is 92 years old, and she still does all the house and garden work by .

  • The roads were in pretty good condition, but the curbs needed repair.

  • Mike the cat taught to climb the bush and ring the doorbell when he wants to come back in.

    You can refer to a cat as itself, but only if you do not know its gender. Here, the name “Mike” is a male name, so we use himself instead.

  • When my daughter broke her arm she couldn’t really wash .

  • My grandfather bought this watch from Mark Twain !

Activity 3: Tell a story!

Answer the questions about yourself using 1-2 sentences and at least one reflexive pronoun.

  • Tell a story about a time that you accidentally hurt yourself!

    e.g. Once I cut myself pretty badly while cutting a watermelon.

  • How do you usually amuse yourself when you have to wait?

    e.g. Usually I amuse myself by people-watching or looking through Facebook or Instagram feeds on my phone.

  • When was the last time you really enjoyed yourself?

    e.g. The last time I really enjoyed myself was when I was on vacation in Turkey with my family.

  • When you finish a project or pass an exam successfully, how do you reward yourself?

    e.g. I like to reward myself with some tasty food and a big dessert.

  • Do you prefer studying by yourself or in a group?

    e.g. I usually prefer studying by myself.

  • What are some things you prefer to do yourself rather than have someone do for you?

    e.g. I usually do my nails myself.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

    e.g. I see myself living in a small house not far from the ocean and having a home office with a nice view.
