Activity 1: Identify why!

Take a look at these future sentences that use the present continuous and the present simple. Can you identify which one is used and why?

  • Mary is sharing an apartment with a friend next semester.

  • Classes start the week after orientation.

  • Mary is doing her graduate studies when she starts school in September.

  • Mary is doing her graduate studies when she starts school in September.

  • Mary’s parents are flying to Cancun over Thanksgiving.

  • Mary is visiting her friend Maggie for Thanksgiving.

  • Maggie will be working while Mary is studying for school.

  • Mary’s homework will get harder as the end of term gets closer.

  • If she earns good grades, Mary will buy herself an ice cream sundae.

  • Mary leaves to study abroad at the end of the semester.

  • Mary hopes she gets straight As this term.

Hey there Patty!

I !can’t wait until the school year begins this fall. I !continue my PE teacher studies at the grad school at UNA, here in my hometown, Buffalo!

I!’m taking a lot of special classes next semester. The dance department !offer several new classes this year, so I!’m signing up for ballet and jazz dance. Since I !love trekking, I!’m looking at a special adventure training course. This semester, the course !concentrate on how !to prepare for intense !hiking. I!’m really looking forward to this course!

I!’m moving out of my parents’ house this year too. I !share an apartment with my friend Jenny. She!’s enrolling in the graduate program for American History. Like me, she !wants to be a teacher, so she !looks at education classes next fall.

The semester !begins in late September. Classes !start after the orientation week. I !has vacation time for Thanksgiving, of course, and I!’d love to drop in to New York City !to see you. My parents !fly to Cancun on Black Friday, so I !can travel that same day. Usually, the train to New York !is leaving early in the morning, so we !can spend all weekend together. What !do you think?

Activity 3: Tell us your plans!

You’ve been accepted to the University of North America. To help you start your studies, the university has sent you this survey to fill out, talking about the plans you have for your future.

Most of the questions can be answered using the present continuous, but some should use other verb forms.

Write complete sentences. Here are some verbs you can use in your answers:

get in touch with / join / play / take / arrive / rent / stay

  • When will you graduate from high school?

    Sample answers:
    I graduate on the 13th of June.
    I’m graduating on the 13th of June.
    I’m going to graduate on the 13th of June.

  • When are you arriving on campus?

    Sample answers:
    I’m arriving on Monday.
    I arrive on September 12th.
    I’m going to arrive on Monday.

  • Where are you going to be living?

    Sample answers:
    I’m renting an apartment.
    I’m going to rent an apartment.

  • What courses are you planning to take in the first semester?

    Sample answers:
    I’m taking organic chemistry.
    I’m going to take organic chemistry.

  • What extracurricular activities do you plan to do?

    Sample answers:
    I’m going to join the choir.(Here we use going to instead of the present continuous because even though you have already decided, it is not an official plan yet.)
    I’m playing football. (You can only use the present continuous if you are already on the team.)

  • When will you graduate from high school?

    Sample answers:
    I’m getting in touch with her this week.
    I’m going to get in touch with her this week.
