These activities are part of our Japanese Grammar series. The skills we are practicing here are covered in our article:

Activity 1: Mad Libs

Remember the Mad Libs game you played in childhood? In the blanks below, you’ll fill in whatever comes to mind as long as it follows what’s written in the parentheses! For example, if the parentheses indicate that they want a noun, you can write down anything as long as it’s a noun (i.e., cat). Then you’ll translate whatever wacky sentence you get into Japanese. Don’t think too hard about what word to choose and have fun with it! For example:

English:

I’m going to go meet Messi (1. person)!

Japanese:

メッシ (1) に会いに行くんだ!

Your turn!

The Perfect Present

English:

At (1. time) I rode (2. vehicle) and headed to (3. location). There, I looked for a (4. noun) to give to (5. person).

Example answer:
At five o’ clock (1. time) I rode the train (2. vehicle) and headed to the department store (3. location). There, I looked for a cat (4. noun) to give to Claude Monet (5. person).

Japanese:

私は (1) に (2) に乗って、 (3) に向かいました。そこで私は (5) あげる (4) を探しました。

Example answer:
私は5時 (1) に電車 (2) に乗って、デパート (3) に向かいました。そこで私はクロード・モネ (5) にあげる (4) を探しました。
[Watashi wa go-ji (1) ni densha (2) ni notte, depaato (3) ni mukaimashita. Soko de watashi wa Kurōdo Mone (5) ni ageru neko (4) o sagashimashita.]

Great work with that first one! This time, you’ll also need to add the right particle to the Japanese paragraph in the blanks marked (P).

Plant Connoisseur

English:

  • Hiroto: Please come in (1. location).

Please come in the garden (1. location).

  • Haruka: Oh wow! It’s beautiful! (2. plant; plural) are blooming in/on (3. location).

Oh wow! It’s beautiful! Tulips (2. plant; plural) are blooming on the top of the roof (3. location).

  • Hiroto: (4. person) gave them to me last (5. day of the week).

The US president (4. person) gave them to me last Friday (5. day of the week).

  • Haruka: I have never met (4. person)...

I have never met the US president (4. person)…

  • Hiroto: Is that so? They will be at (6. location) at (7. time) today. Let’s go see them together!

Is that so? They will be at the ramen restaurant (6. location) at 7pm (7. time) today. Let’s go see them together!

Japanese:

  • ひろと: どうぞ、 (1) (P) 入ってください。

    どうぞ、 (1) (P) 入ってください。[Dōzo, niwa (1) ni (P) haitte kudasai.]

  • はるか: わあ、とてもきれいですね! (3) (P) (2) が咲いていますね。

  • ひろと: 先週の (5) (P) (4) (P) もらったんです。

    先週の金曜日 (5) (P) アメリカの大統領 (4) に (P) もらったんです。[Senshū no kin’yōbi (5) ni (P) Amerika daitōryō (4) ni (P) morattandesu.]

  • はるか: (5) (P) 会ったことがないのですが…

    アメリカの大統領 (5) (P) 会ったことがないのですが…[Amerika daitōryō (5) ni (P) atta koto ga nainodesu ga…]

  • ひろと: そうなんですか? (7) (P) (6) (P) 来ますよ。一緒に会い行きましょう!

    そうなんですか?今日の午後七時 (7) (P) ラーメン屋 (6) (P) 来ますよ。一緒に会いに行きましょう![Sō nandesu ka? Kyō no gogo shichi-ji (7) ni (P) rāmen-ya (6) ni (P) kimasu yo. Issho ni ai ni ikimashō!]

Activity 2: Choosing the appropriate particle

As we’ve learned, the particle is often confused with other particles. At times it’s difficult to determine which particle is more appropriate in a sentence. Now, using what we learned in the article you’ll be choosing the particle that best fits in the blank! You’ll be provided the sentence in both Japanese and English, so use context clues to see which particle will fit the sentences the best. Select the correct Japanese particle from the two in parentheses.
