Activities: How to use the particle も (mo) with verbs etc. in Japanese?

Activity 1: Complete the sentences

Complete the following sentences using words given in the word bank (you can use the same word more than once if necessary). Use the English sentence as your guide. Don’t forget to change the verb or adjective form and add particles as needed!

  • 料理は大好きです。

    Ryōri wa __ daisuki desu.

    As for dishes, I love both cooking them and eating them.

Activity 2: Correct the errors

Read the following sentences and correct errors. Use the English sentences as your guide.

  • 入学試験はむずかしかったが、意外なも合格していた。

    Nyūgaku shiken wa muzukashikatta ga, igaina mo gōkaku shiteita.

    The entrance exam was difficult, but surprisingly I passed.

  • 犬や猫はペットだが、家族の一員もある。

    Inu ya neko wa petto da ga, kazoku no ichi’in de mo aru.

    Dogs, cats, and others are pets, but they are also members of the family.

  • 手紙をもらったが、返事を書きますもしなかった。

    Tegami o moratta ga, henji o kakimasu mo shinakatta.

    I got a letter, but I didn’t even write back.

  • ぼくは猫舌なので、コーヒーは熱いも冷たいもないぐらいがちょうどいい。

    Boku wa nekojita nanode, kōhii wa atsui mo tsumetai mo nai gurai ga chōdo ii.

    Since my tongue is heat-sensitive, I’d like my coffee neither too hot nor too cold.

    Did you know?
    *猫舌[nekojita](cat’s tongue) is a common expression in Japanese to describe one’s dislike of hot foods or drinks. If you are 猫舌, your tongue just can’t stand a high temperature!
