Activity 1: Creating the ta-form

Let’s start with a warm-up practice on how to make and use the ta-form!

For each verb listed in the word bank below, make the ta-form to be used in following sections.

  • 着る[kiru](to wear)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: 着た[kita]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: 着ました[kimashita]

  • 走る[hashiru](is running)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: 走る[hashiru]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: 走りました[hashirimashita]

  • する[suru](to do)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: した[shita]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: しました[shimashita]

  • 会う[au](to meet)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: 会った[atta]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: 会いました[aimashita]

  • 呼ぶ[yobu](to call)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: 呼んだ[yonda]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: 呼びました [yobimashita]

  • 行く[iku](to go)

    • Ta-form:

      Correct answer: 行った[itta]

    • Polite mashita-form:

      Correct answer: 行きました[ikimashita]

Activity 2: Use the ta-form in a sentence

Put each sentence below into the past tense using the ta-form. Use the same level of politeness used in the sentence you're given.

  • 今日は夏の制服を着る

    Kyō wa natsu no seifuku o kiru.

    Today I will wear the summer uniform.

    昨日は夏の制服を

    kinō wa ie de dorama o __.

    Yesterday I wore the summer uniform.

    Correct answer: 着た[kita]

  • 今週は池の周りを走ります

    Konshū wa ike no mawari o hashirimasu.

    This week I will run around the pond.

    先週は池の周りを

    Senshū wa ike no mawari o ___.

    Last week I ran around the pond.

    Correct answer: 走りました[hashirimashita]

  • 明日は学校に行きますか。

    Ashita wa gakkō ni ikimasu ka.

    Will you go to school tomorrow?

    一昨日は学校に

    Ototoi wa gakkō ni ___.

    Did you go to school the day before yesterday?

    Correct answer: 行きましたか[ikimashitaka]

  • 今年はサンタクロースに手紙を書きません

    Kotoshi wa santakurōsu ni tegami o kakimasen.

    I will not write a letter to Santa Claus this year.

    去年はサンタクロースに手紙を

    Kyonen wa santakurōsu ni tegami o ___.

    I did not write a letter to Santa Claus last year.

    Correct answer: 書きませんでした[kakimasen deshita]

  • あ、お医者さんが呼んでいますよ。

    A, oishasan ga yonde imasu yo.

    Hey, the doctor is calling you.

    さっき、お医者さんがよ。

    Sakki, oisyasan ga ___ yo.

    The doctor was calling you a few minutes ago.

    Correct answer: 書きませんでした[kakimasen deshita]

  • いま、父は料理をしていません

    Ima, chichi wa ryōri o shiteimasen.

    My father is not cooking now.

    電話があったとき、父は料理を

    Denwa ga atta toki, chichi wa ryōri o ___.

    My father was not cooking when the phone call came in.

    Correct answer: 書きませんでした[kakimasen deshita]

Activity 3: Finish the conversation

Conversation 1: Kinkakuji Temple

You are planning a trip to Kyoto and your colleague Mrs. Yamada recommends Kinkakuji Temple. Let’s have a conversation about your trip to Kyoto with her! Note that Mrs. Yamada talks to you casually but you talk in polite form.

Some helpful vocab: 京都[kyoto](Kyoto), 旅行[ryokō](trip), 金閣寺[Kinkakuji](temple), 〜はどう?[... wa dō?](“What about… ?), 小説[shōsetsu](novel).

Also note that 三島由紀夫 is MISHIMA Yukio, a famous author who published the novel 金閣寺(Kinkakuji, The Temple of the Golden Pavillion).
  • Mrs. Yamada

    京都旅行いくの? いいね。金閣寺はどう?

    Kyōto ryokō iku no? Ii ne. Kinkakuji wa dō?

    A trip to Kyoto? That's nice. What about Kinkakuji temple?

  • You:

    先週、三島由紀夫の小説『金閣寺』を ___。

    Senshū, Mishima Yukio no shōsetsu Kinkakuji o ___.

    Last week, I read Yukio Mishima's novel, "The Temple of the Golden Pavilion."
