These activities are part of our Japanese Grammar series. The skills we are practicing here are covered in our article:

Exercise 1: Combine the sentences!

Let’s put together two sentences and make them one sentence. One of them is going to be the modifying clause for a noun in the other sentence. Modify the first sentence so that the noun in blue will be modified by a clause and fits in the blank of the second sentence. Check the English translation to see if you are doing it right.

The rain that was pouring down last night stopped this morning.

  • In this question, you will need to remove the pronoun その[sono] before the noun 学生[gakusei] so that you can add the modifying clause.

    その学生はこのクラスで一番背が高いです。

Sono gakusei wa kono kurasu de ichiban se ga takai desu.

That student is the tallest in this class.

    学生は山口さんです。
... gakusei wa Yamaguchi san desu.
The student who is the tallest in this class is Ms. Yamaguchi.

  • This question uses external information! The first sentence will be the content of the noun in the second sentence.

    夜空に星が輝いています。

Stars are shining in the night sky.

    美術館でを見ました。

👉 Did you remember to add という[toiu] to indicate that the modifying clause is quoting the content of the rumor?

Exercise 2: Describing your friends

Someone approaches you and says they are looking for a person who should be nearby. You know the person and want to tell them by describing what the person is doing or how the person looks. You can try creating several different descriptions about each person. Make sure the description grammatically fits in the blank to modify the noun [hito](person). We’ll provide you with some vocabulary below each picture so that you have ideas on how to describe them! Some verbs will need to be in the progressive form to describe the ongoing action.
