These activities are part of our Japanese Grammar series. The skills we are practicing here are covered in our article:

Activity 1: Pick the right phrase

Choose the right phrase and complete the sentence.

  • 、あつくなった。
    ___, atsuku natta.
As soon as it became sunny, it became hot.

  • たくさん勉強したので、あとはテストをだ。
Takusan benkyō shita node, ato wa tesuto o ___da.
Because I studied a lot, all that is left to do is wait for it.

  • 今から飛行機にです。
Ima kara hikōki ni ___ desu.
I am about to get on the plane.

Activity 2: Complete the dialogue

Choose the most appropriate expression from the word bank and complete the sentences. You may use some expressions more than once.

Word Bank:

とたん

ばかり

ところ

ばかりの

ばかりか

ばかりに

ところで

どころか

  • 田中(Tanaka) and キム(Kimu) are coworkers. They are meeting at a coffee shop to go to their client’s office together. 田中 arrived a little late.
  • 田中

    すみません、待ちましたか。
    Sumimasen, machimashita ka.
    Sorry, did you wait (long)?

  • キム

    いいえ、今来たです。
    Iie, ima kita ___ desu.
    No, I just came here.

  • 田中

    そうですか。じゃあ、行きましょうか。
Sō desu ka. Jā ikimashō ka.
Is that so? Then, shall we go?

  • ▶ They exit the coffee shop.
  • キム

    あ、外に出た、雨が降ってきましたね。
A, soto ni deta ___ ame ga futte kimashita ne.
Ah, as soon as we got out, it started raining.

Notice the main idea in this sentence is that it started raining, so you cannot use ばかり. ところ is possible, but here, you are emphasizing the second event happening immediately after the first, so とたん is appropriate.

  • 田中

    そうですねえ。でも、大丈夫ですよ。今日買ったのかさを持ってきましたから。
Sō desu nē. Demo, daijōbu desu yo. Kyō katta ___ no kasa o motte kimashita kara.
Yes it did, but it’s OK. I brought an umbrella I just bought today.

ばかり is the one expression that can modify a noun.

  • キム

    すみません、じゃあ、いっしょに入ってもいいですか。最近、雨が降っていますね。
Sumimasen, jā issho ni haittemo ii desu ka. Saikin, ame ga futte ___ imasu ne.
Thanks, then is it OK if we use the umbrella together? Recently, it keeps raining.

〜たばかりいる/います (polite) is used to express something is happening consistently or repeatedly.

  • 田中

    ええ、本当に。昨日は、雨ひょうもふりましたよ。あ、大丈夫ですか。肩がぬれていますよ。
Ē hontōni. Kinō wa ame ___ ka hyō mo furimashita yo. A, daijōbu desu ka. Kata ga nurete imasu yo.
Yes, really. Yesterday, we had not only rain but also hail. Oh, are you OK? Your shoulders are wet.

    どころか means “not only—but also—.”

  • キム

    ええ、でもぬれたすぐかぜをひくわけでもないので、大丈夫です。
Ē, demo nureta ___ sugu kaze o hiku wake demonai node, daijōbu desu.
Yes, but even if you get wet, it’s not like you get a cold right away, so it’s OK.

  • 田中

    そうですか。それにしても、キムさんは日本語が上手ですね。
Sō desu ka. Sorenishitemo, Kimu san wa Nihongo ga jōzu desu ne.
Is that so? By the way, you are good at Japanese.

  • キム

    いえいえ、まだまだです。でも、日本に来たの時は、大変でした。
Ieie, madamada desu. Demo, Nihon ni kita ___ no toki wa, taihen deshita.
No no, I have a long way to go. But when I just arrived in Japan, it was tough.

ばかり+の can come in front of a noun to modify it.

  • 田中

    あ、クライアントのオフィスはあそこですよ。まだちょっと早いですね。
A, kuraianto no ofysu wa asoko desu yo. Mada, chotto hayai desu ne.
Ah, the client’s office is over there. It’s still early.

  • キム

    そうですね。じゃあ、そこの公園で休みましょうか。もう準備は全部しましたから、あとはクライアントと会うだし。
Sō desu ne. Jā soko no kōen de yasumi mashō ka. Mō junbi wa zenbu shimashita kara, ato wa kuraianto to au ___ dashi.
That’s true. Then, should we take a break at that park? We have already done all the preparation. All we have left to do is to meet the client.

ばかり here means “all that is left to do…”

  • 田中

    ええ、そうしましょう。
    Ē, sō shimashō.
    Yes, let’s do that.
