Activity 1: Whodunnit with Adverbs and Adverbials

Your uncle’s prized diamond ring has disappeared and anyone could be the culprit! Answer the famous private eye’s questions by selecting a logical time, reason, manner, or place phrase from the word box.

Activity 2: Unscramble the Message!

The great detective received an envelope with various phrases cut from a newspaper. Surely there is a secret message in all this! Put all the pieces in the most neutral word order to help unscramble the message.

You will need to look at whether each adverb or adverbial describes time, reason, manner, or place before deciding on the best order — not every sentence will have all four types.

Note for Instructors
This exercise is also a good opportunity to review word order in main clauses, such as placing the finite verb in the 2nd position and all other verb forms at the end.

Activity 3: The great detective’s notebook

Now that the great detective managed to unscramble the message, he makes some notes in his notebook while thinking about what is important.

Take the sentences from Activity 2 and rewrite them so that you emphasize the required element by moving it to the first position.
